Tackling addiction in our community

Our mission is to work together to deepen the understanding of substance use and addiction in the Muslim community while exploring ways to decrease its impact on individuals, families, and communities. You’re in the right place if you struggle with addiction, want to learn how to help your family/community, are reconciling being Muslim, or are seeking professional help.

The Elephant in the Community

  • 11% of US Muslims have an alcohol or drug use disorder (46% were born outside of the US).

  • 37% of US Muslims personally know a Muslim with addiction

  • Based on 24 studies of Muslim communities, the most common barriers to treatment are:

    • denial of the problem severity

    • fear of breach in confidentiality and privacy

    • avoiding bringing shame to the family and community

    • lack of trust in the treatment system

    • the need for community support

What We Do

  • Support Groups

We offer free virtual support groups for individuals and family members navigating addiction. You can join the waitlist for online groups or just view past recordings. Click below to view past recordings or to join the waitlist for the next support group.

  • Private Telemedicine Visits

Schedule a consultation session to speak with an addiction specialist through our affiliated Madina House Clinic. The clinic provides telehealth visits in the privacy of your home. It serves all of California, accepts medical insurance, and is not supported by donations.

  • Sober Housing Program

We no longer offer a housing program. Learn about our past outcomes and sober housing model below.

Madina House (http://www.MadinaHouse.org) is a non-profit organization that started to address substance use disorder in underserved populations through sober housing and free counseling programs. Madina House dedicates a portion of its activities to bridge the significant gap between treatment need and utilization in the Muslim community through community interventions including workshops and support groups. The community webinars and support groups are conducted free of charge by community volunteers. The sober homes are all donated by private donors, do not generate profit, and unpaid volunteers support operations. We do not accept or distribute zakat but connect qualifying individuals to their community resources. Our affiliated medical clinic, Madina House Clinic (www.MadinaHouseClinic.com) accepts medical insurance to provide a professional service and is not supported in any way by donations or volunteers.
